Hey Mom! Look – it’s you! You’re back!

An analysis and conclusion on the revival of the Mom Jeans

I understand fashion runs its course and recycling seems to be a strong go to for the industry’s survival. But, I remember watching those make-over shows from the early 2000s [What Not To Wear – the UK version ring a bell?] and being strictly told that the Mom Jeans were gone and gone for good. And no one in their right minds would be caught dead wearing them.

But low and behold, it’s 2017 and here we are. The rich and the famous have grown tired of the skinny jean, the ripped jean, the barely covers my bum ripped jean, the boyfriend jean, the boot-cut jean and has now gone where no fashionista would have dared go 6 years ago – to the ever so hated 90s go to jeans for the mummy’s of the world “The Mom Jean”.

A younger me is remembering an Oprah episode where some poor pitiful mothers were brought up on stage and told how ridiculous their jeans looked and Oprah with a flick of a wand transformed them to the modern day mothers of the time.

So we know what the hatred for the jean was, but why the hatred? Well the fit made no sense. It went over your waist, so it made your fat gut look fatter. It tapered at the ankle, so it made your short legs look even shorter. It puffed around the hips so it made your pear shape look just plain ballooned.

But the Gigi’s of the world have take this old looking jean and given it a much deserved face lift. Unfortunately, I think you need to be skin and bones and have long legs to pull this one off. I admit – it is not for everyone. But it does have a delicious retro vibe to it that I can not get enough of. The 80s and 90s are back and the jeans are a tribute to that epic era. Slipping into a pair of them definitely made me feel like I was in an episode of stranger things or was back at the Breakfast club or having a coffee at central perk.

As such, my verdict is that the jeans are back in style but I feel like the trend will be temporary and a younger crowd more nostalgic of a retro era open to trying them.

So, if you have decided you want to give it another go, here are some tips on how to pair them:

  1. Wear a graphic tee and tuck the jeans in always. An 80s band t-shirt is definitely the way to go.
  2. Wear a thicker leather belt –  if you have a feeling you are showing a bit of tummy, it may be best to draw attention to the belt. It also gives the illusion of a cinched waist and longer legs.
  3. Do not and I repeat – Do NOT – especially if you are a shorter person, wear this with flats. The jean will lose its appeal. Pair it with the most daring heel you have.
  4. Wear your hair messy and a bolder lip accompanied with heavy wrist accessories

I would not invest in an expensive pair unless you are sure you want to wear these for a while. Here are some recommendations;

  1. MANGO  – Mom jeans at $59.99
  2. Zara – Mom Jeans at $39.99
  3. Topshop – Mom jeans at $70.00

I tried the pair out at the beach last weekend – check it out on my instagram page @thehighclose

Have fun and let me know if you did end up trying them! 🙂
